I was first drawn to the Maldives by its surreal beauty—those impossibly white beaches, turquoise lagoons, and overwater bungalows that seemed to float on dreams. Back then, I wasn’t even thinking about scuba diving. But since we were traveling halfway around the world, I figured I’d give it a try. So, on a very cold day in February, I got certified… in Lake Mead. Not exactly paradise, but it got the job done.
Our journey took us from Las Vegas to L.A. and then on to Singapore and finally to Male, with a quick overnight in the capital of the Maldives. The next morning, we boarded a blue-and-yellow Maldivian Air Taxi seaplane, an iconic part of the Maldivian travel experience. These twin-otter planes, with their casual charm and barefoot pilots, offered an unforgettable journey. There’s no cockpit door, just ocean views—and as we lifted off, the coral atolls sparkled below like emeralds in turquoise glass. It was the perfect prelude to paradise – Kuramathi Island Resort.
Located in the Rasdhoo Atoll, Kuramathi is one of the larger private island resorts in the Maldives, stretching nearly a mile long with lush vegetation, winding sandbanks, and vibrant marine life just off its shores. With multiple restaurants, a top-tier spa, and a renowned dive center, Kuramathi combines barefoot luxury with an adventurous spirit. Our overwater villa, perched above the crystal-clear lagoon, was everything I had imagined and more.
The next morning, we signed up for our first ocean dive – EVER. It was a whirlwind assembling gear, nervously checking equipment, trying not to betray how new we were to it all. My dive buddy had trouble with his descent, and the dive itself was a bit chaotic. But once we surfaced, we knew we were in.
We returned to the dive center hoping to hire a private dive master. It was peak season, and at first, they hesitated. Just as we were about to leave, the shop owner said, “You’re Americans? You should meet the only American dive master in the Maldives right now.”
Enter Megan Collins…
After a quick greeting, Megan asked me where I was born and when I said I was from the Dallas–Fort Worth area, she smiled and again asked, “But where were you born?” “McKinney, Texas,” I finally answered. Her eyes widened. “That’s where my whole family is from.”
Halfway around the world, we found someone from the same town of my birth: What are the odds?!
The next morning, Megan greeted us at the pier with a wide smile. “I’ll be your dive master for the rest of the trip.” From then on, we dove nearly every day—sometimes three dives a day—earning our Advanced Open Water, Deep Dive, and Nitrox certifications under Megan’s expert guidance.
She was meticulous, calm, and passionate, instilling in us a respect for the reef and its fragile inhabitants. She introduced us to her favorites: nudibranchs, small, technicolor sea slugs, no bigger than a fingernail yet absolutely mesmerizing. She led us to her favorite frogfish couple camouflaged in coral, and along staggering cliffs that shimmered with life.
What started as a vacation became a journey of transformation, a lifelong love of diving born from that island, that reef, and that serendipitous connection.
To this day, Megan and I remain close friends. She’s even visited me twice here in Las Vegas reminding me that even in the most remote places, meaningful connections can make the world feel small.
