Ever since I was little, I’ve loved to cook. My grandmothers, my mother, and always — Julia. She was my guide, my teacher, and my muse. I still remember watching Julia Child & More Company on PBS at age 11 or 12. She made Gâteau de Mont-Saint-Michel, delicate French crêpes layered with Normandy apples and a rich burnt-almond cream. It wasn’t just dessert; it was a journey. I needed to know what kind of place could inspire something like that.
What I discovered was magic: a tidal island crowned by a medieval abbey, seemingly floating at high tide and bathed in golden light at low tide. A place born from a dream: quite literally a dream; when the Archangel Michael appeared to a bishop and told him to build something divine.
Years later, I stood on that very causeway, watching the spire rise out of the sea. And every doubt melted away.
Just like buttah (as Linda Richmond says).
Mont-Saint-Michel is more than a destination. It’s a reminder that beauty, inspiration, and even divine dreams can begin in the most unexpected ways.
Sometimes, it even starts with a dessert.
Let them eat cake: even if she never really said that.
