Some passions begin in childhood—and never let go. I’ve been fascinated by Egypt for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I would check out every book I could find on ancient Egyptian gods, hieroglyphs, and pharaohs. But it wasn’t just the books. I was glued to every documentary that would come on PBS. And in most of them, there was one unmistakable figure: Dr. Zahi Hawass, the renowned archaeologist and Egypt’s former Minister of Antiquities, he was everywhere. With his signature Indiana Jones-style hat, booming voice, and larger-than-life presence, he brought Egypt’s past to life like no one else. I was a superfan. My first trip to Egypt was in college on a shoestring budget and that experience kindled a lifelong passion. Years later, with a bit more experience, a deeper appreciation, and yes, a healthier budget, I found myself planning a return to Egypt. On a whim (and with some nerve), I wrote to Dr. Hawass, directly to share my lifelong passion for his country’s history. To my surprise, he wrote back personally and connected me with Mr. Walid El Batouty, an extraordinary guide and fellow scholar who would shape our experience in unforgettable ways. I began this series of Moments of Inspirations by sharing the story of standing -utterly alone- inside the Great Pyramid. That moment of stillness and awe remains one of the most powerful of my life. But there were others. While touring the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Walid led us through the exhibits with the kind of reverence that only comes from a life steeped in history. As we walked down a quiet hallway, he suddenly turned to us, smiled mischievously, and began snapping his fingers—urging us to do the same. We followed his lead, our rhythm echoing lightly through the corridor. Then we turned the corner—and there it was: a stunning wall relief of ancient Egyptian musicians, captured in stone, frozen mid-performance. It was as if Walid had summoned the music from centuries past. In that moment, the scene came to life—not just visually, but audibly. It was magic. That’s the power of Egypt. It moves you, surprises you, and if you’re lucky, it lets you feel the heartbeat of an ancient world. At GLM Luxury Events, we believe in creating more than itineraries.
