There are journeys—and then there are the ones that stay with you. Diving off the coast of Easter Island had long been a dream. But doing so with a member of the family behind one of the island’s most storied dive centers—founded by crew members of Jacques Cousteau’s original Calypso team—made it unforgettable. Henri and Michel GarcĂa, born in the south of France, came to Rapa Nui in the late 1970s. Henri arrived first in 1976 as part of Cousteau’s scientific expedition, and Michel joined shortly after. Together, they founded Orca Diving Center in 1980—bringing a spirit of discovery and oceanic stewardship to one of the most remote places on Earth.
I had the chance to dive with a member of their family—someone who carries forward their legacy of curiosity, reverence, and deep respect for the island and its waters.
Before we descended, they gave a warning I’ll never forget: “You may only go down 100 feet… but be careful. The water here is so clear, the ocean will call to you. You’ll see the bottom and want to go deeper. And if you’re not paying attention—you will.”Â
They were right. Somewhere past 100 feet (give or take a few 🙄), I rolled onto my back and looked up toward the surface. It was so crystal-clear I could see the waves churning above, crashing into the cliffs of Motu Nui—the sacred islet where the Tangata Manu (Birdman cult) rituals once took place. I could see it all in perfect detail. It didn’t feel like being underwater. It felt like being inside the ocean.
The Moai may watch from land, but beneath the surface, the soul of the island speaks in a different way.
At GLM Luxury Events, experiences like this continue to shape how I design. Because when you’re welcomed into a place by people who live its story—you don’t just travel. You connect.
